Media Advisory - Workers Create Toronto Funeral Procession Mourning Massive Job Losses

    TORONTO, Oct. 6 /CNW/ - Members of the CAW and Toronto and York Region
Labour Council will march through downtown Toronto October 7 in a funeral
procession to mourn the loss of nearly 200,000 manufacturing jobs across the
country since the Stephen Harper Conservatives came into office.
    The New Orleans-style funeral procession will begin at Nathan Phillips
Square at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 in fitting welcome to the Prime
Minister who will be speaking at the Sheraton Centre at noon.
    CAW National President Ken Lewenza and Toronto and York Region Labour
Council President John Cartwright will be joined by recently laid off workers
from mattress manufacturer Simmons in Brampton, which closed suddenly in early
September, Progressive Moulded Plastics which closed without warning in early
July, putting 2,000 people out of work and others formerly employed at local
manufacturing facilities which have also closed down.
    The group will be demonstrating against what they see as the callous
mismanagement of the economy at the expense of working people.
